Considering a tank is in well parameters and 10% water changes are done weekly, is it frowned upon to take the multiple opportunities and 10 gallons I would otherwise discard and use this for a "pop up" QT when we plan a new addition? Light, HOB, heater, small water changes and such but then being able to shut the QT down if no additions are expected? When a fish needs to be observed or treated, another water change would provide a quick hospital tank.

Of course this would mean this one system could only house one of either fish or coral at one time. Never both. So additions really would have to be planned and paced but that seems to be a good practice anyway.

It's an idea I've played around with in my head. Maybe it's dumb and maybe it'll save the hassle of having to monitor and manage two to three tanks eternally.

I really want to start getting into QT but can't imagine having three boxes of water all at once in a small space or the fact that each one will have to complete a cycle. (The wife is just now getting used to it all lol)

This would also mean I could feed new specimens heavily without too much concern for the long term effects on the water quality because in between new water friends, the QT would be emptied, later to be resurrected with a new 10g of well managed, already cycled water.

Iuno, just wondering.

PS. If the issue is that you may be introducing pests into a QT from your main, would it be worth giving the QT a fish less period for them to starve?

Yea, its a skip cycle tank. I have marine pure ceramic balls in a bag in the DT. that and tank water.

You just have to make sure that the QT bio media isn't returned to the display sump. Things can only travel from the display to the QT, not the other way around. So if you want to have more bio media available later (to repeat this process) you need to replace what you used with fresh new media in the display sump.

I use an aquaclear hob filter on my QT, I buy a 3 pack of sponges and throw them in the DT sump. Let them brew until I need them, I use fresh saltwater to setup the QT when I need it, break it down when it's done. Even if I am getting another fish soon, I break down, bleach, dry, set back up free for the next one.

Wow that seems so reasonable as long as you keep a good schedule. It makes QT a lot less intimidating. Right now I have a deep blue 7.5 cube nano running with an aqua clear which I could expect to use for smaller fish and a coral frag shopping spree. I would just need to find out a solution for Tangs and Triggers in the future. Thanks guys!!

I'll add that I set my quarantine salinity to what the fish are coming from, just test the bag it's usually 1.020 around here, add ro/salt to match if needed. Then you can slowly adjust salinity to match your display over weeks. Doing it this way, I just temperature acclimate by floating the bag and put the fish in the QT (no bag water) with no drip needed.
I also try to setup at least a couple days in advance.

That's what I imagined. The family get's excited about "fish day" or "coral day" so I would know in advance when I feel like picking something up. Reefin and learning, learning and reefin:D
