!!! Welcome to R2R !!!

My very first tank was set up with live rock from the ocean....TBS. It was received completely submersed in water and there was no obvious die off. feather dusters, cup corals and sponges all looked great within an hour of being placed in the tank. I was uneducated and added ammonia to 2.0 and the tank processed it in less than 24 hours....so effectively there was no cycle.

If your rock is not transported fully submersed there will be some die off but if properly taken care of I think it would "cycle" in a matter of a week or two. Better safe than sorry though.

So your going to have some die off.I would treat it like a regular cycling and test every few days.It may cycle a little faster than say a dry rock start but ya won't know with out doing regular testing.JMO.
thank you sooo much ☺️☺️☺️

thank you
Exactly this.

Expect to wait one month. After 30 days do a big water change.
In those days you’ll be allble to observe the tank. Make changes. Scrub alge , remove bad hikers and get the good bacteria back to life.

If you want to do it silly fast , wait for no ammonia , do a water change , and add fish.
Nature will set the time that way. Week to two? Maybe?[/QUOTE
thank you soo much

Welcome! You certainly can cycle with rock out of the ocean. Its called live rock and that's how it's always been done, until recently.

Check the laws in your area to see if it's legal first!

i double cheacked ... the law says it is illegal to buy and sell corals only it said nothin about the rocks

Welcome to R2R!

I would NOT dip the rocks. The dip chemicals will get trapped in the rocks pores. You will get some dieoff. Sponges probably will not make it. They may stink for a bit while curing after two days in transit, so you may want to cure in a bucket or vat and not in the tank.
thank you

If ur close to the sea and manage to keep the rocks in buckets of water, did off will be minimal and that will be good for a quick cycle. I'd be wary of the pests that could hitchhike on the rocks. If corals are not allowed then it'll be probablybillegal to take rocks as they also might have some corals on them?
NO it is not illegal for the rocks ..., it only states that buyin and sellin of corals is illegal it says nothin about the rocks

My current tank is set up with uncured ocean collected rock and it cycled in 10 days.. I have a few hitchhiker corals popping up that I didn’t see when rock was introduced to tank so you may want to keep a eye on that if they are not legal.
Thank you soo much...

how long will it take to fully cycle the tank with those rocks and yes there are no laws against live rocks its only illegal for corals

The time it takes to cure rock from the ocean depends on all the parameters in your system and how those work together during the process. It is not possible to guess how long it will take without knowing what the rock you are using is like (how "dirty" or "clean" it is) and what your tank set up is?

"Put the rock in the tank, shut off the lights and wait 6 weeks" is what we used to tell folks who were using fresh live rock from Florida back when that was legal. I hope this helps, and welcome to R2R!

Welcome to Reef 2 Reef, and greetings from New York!
I have done the same thing with a local tank. Using natural seawater and rocks from the ocean is a great idea, and it works better than using synthetic seawater. Pests are part of the hobby, and you can get them from any distributor. Collecting stuff is the best part of this hobby for me. If you like a high stock of fish in your tank, this is the way to go. No one believes it until they see it, but my local tank contains over a 100 inches of fish, and it’s only a 60 gal. No fancy anything! Just a simple freshwater filter and a air stone. No sump, dosing, heat, powerheads, ATO, or expensive lights. Just 20 gal water changes every 2-3 weeks, and a deep sand/gravel bed.
Good Luck and Welcome !!!
****** My tanks have Live Rock and Live Sand, but have never cycled, and I just added fish.

I'm very glad you checked. Now you can relax and enjoy the journey. Did I mention we like pics? ;)

I think that's a fine idea to cycle with rock straight from the ocean. Can You bring it home & keep it wet or in sea water all the way to the tank? even better.
Also welcome to R2R . we will enjoy watching you tank grow. Please share pictures !
