Can anyone help me identify and treat this?

I have this algae (I think) bloom in my tank. It sprang up about 10 days ago. My corals were extremely happy, now they’re staying closed and seem to be unhappy.

Had the water tested at the LFS on a Spin Touch yesterday.

pH: 7.9
Phos: 0.1
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 0
Ammonia: 0
Alkalinity: 7.994
Mg: 1268
Ca: 397


The previous week the readings were the same with the exception of Phosphates being 0.

The LFS said my tank is too clean. I tend to think the bloom is consuming everything before it hits the water stream. LFS says I need to dose the tank neonitro and neophos.
I’m not sure what to do. I’m worried I’ll just be feeding the bloom.


So, I first need to know what this is, and then what to do about it?

Continue to feed heavily. Remove algae manually if possible and get some mexican turbos to help.

This issue usually sorts itself out within the first 6 months if your husbandry is on point and you dont let the issue continue to grow out of hand.

What are you running for mechanical filtration?

These are dinos and your LFS is partly right with the low levels being responsible. When we see zero readings, automatically we assume this is the cause but by the time you see zero numbers, its because the dino has consumed the po4 and no3 and are multiplying and in turn many dose no3 and po4 to bring numbers up not realizing they are feeding these flagellates even more.
Its biological deficiencies that are causing the dino structure and tank is already doomed.
No light is first key followed by the addition of bacteria to overcome the bad bacteria allowing them to thrive
Prepare by starting by blowing this stuff loose with a turkey baster and siphon up loose particles. Turn lights off (at least white and run blue at 10-15% IF you have light dependant corals) for 5 days and at night dose 1ml of 3% hydrogen peroxide per 10 gallons for all 5 nights. If you dont have light dependent coral- turn all lights off. During the day dose 1ml of liquid bacteria (such as micro bacter 7 or XLM) per 10 gallons. Clean filters daily and DO NOT FEED CORAL FOODS OR ADD NOPOX
You can feed fish as normal and if doing blackout, ambient light in room will work for them

The peroxide won’t hurt zoas, a bubble tip anemone, Duncan’s, or mushrooms? Just want to be sure before I start.

No. Its mainly water at low level 3% and serves as an oxidizer than a treatment
 
Filter floss, Standard chemipure, a filter sock, and some carbon.
I would remove it all and only put floss and the sock online when you are getting your elbows wet by removing as much algae as possible.

Only put carbon online when your tank smells like lowtide.

That should help bring your nutrients up a bit.

Mb7 toasted my po4 and no3 dont to undetectable levels. I didnt start seeing dinos till I dosed mb7 a coup[le times to build more bio diversity. Would you suspect copepods and phyto may help that out ?

MB7 will not consume po4 or no3 as it competes with the cells of cyano and dino, but rather when you see zero numbers, its because the dino has consumed the po4 and no3

on the bottle it says rapid reduction
