Can anyone tell me what this is?

This stringy stuff popped up all over my tank and I thought it had to do with carbon dosing so I cut my dose in half but I'm still having problems with it. It isn't as bad now but it still is collecting on my rocks and stuff. Does anyone know what it is and how to get rid of it.

Not sure, can you give some details about your tank? How long has it been setup? Water Parameters? All recent activity before the stringy stuff started showing up...

No it's not vermatid snails webs. It's some kind a slimy stringy stuff. I have a hang on skimmer and if I don't keep bubble trap filter clean it will be covered in this reddish colored slime. Tank has been up for about a year and everything is within normal range except my phosphates have gotten high at about .21 with a Hanna checker.

I don't things it's hydroids either. I think it is some kind of algae bloom or was and now it's just the left over stuff. It seems as when I was dosing more vodka it was a lot worse but since I get the vodka dose in half it isn't as bad.

No not really. It looks like some kind of slime when I take it out of water

Ok - I don't have an answer for what it is. However I do experience that from time to time. Here is what I get. I use a food baster to 'blow off' my live rock when I make water changes. I will sometimes get these stringy lines off the live rock -after- I use the baster. What I do next is use a siphon to complete the water change, and siphon these up off the rocks. What I have seen does not seem to be to the extent of your pictures, but it appears to be very similar.

It's kind of hard to blow off everything but it does blow off. I use a mini baster like u get in the med aisle at Walmart to suck it up with but sometimes it sucks in and then pulls out of the baster when I pull back from it so I have to suck it up a few times before it finally releases from what it is on. The best way I found to get rid of a majority of it is take the rocks out and scrub them with a brush under running water. It eventually comes back within a few weeks though. I looked up dinoflagellates but I don't think that's it either. I'm stumped.

Sure looks like a bacterial bloom, still probably related to your carbon dosing. Give it some time and it should go away.

Agreed looks bacterial maybe try to cut down on the carbon by half & see how it goes...

Yea it got better when I already cut the carbon dosing in half but it is still present a little. It was a lot worse than it is now. So u think I need to cut it n half again. I have a 55 gal tank with probably 40 to 45 gal water volume and I'm dosing 1/2 teaspoon a day or another words 2.5 ml I believe. I using a medicine syringe u give kids medicine with.

This will happen when Carbon dosing, its Bacteria like the guys have said. I had this on the underside of my rock's usually you had to look for it.
