Trying to figure out the longterm effect or short term effect of dosing DIY Coral Snow. It seems pretty harmless (should be like crushed coral powder or the same substance that corals build their skeletons with), but I don’t like taking chances. I think it would be fine with LPS or softies, but I’m not exactly sure how larger dose’s (let’s say 100 mL) will affect Acro’s. Apparently it’s the same as KZ Coral Snow. It’s just $50 cheaper and about 3x as much. :-)

The solution I’m using is for 100/G total volume:

10 TBS of CaCO3 to 500 mL’s of RODI.

From the above mixture I draw up 10 mL and dose it weekly. Could this be dosed daily or 2-3x a day? Just to be clear, I’m referring to the solution w/o bacteria, because I do use the same solution with 20 drops of MB7 when needed. Let me know what you guys think. A 10 mL dose had no effect on the Acro’s. Although the bacterial mixture obviously dropped my nutrients a little.

I'm not sure on the 2x to 3x per day, but can say that I have overdosed in one application previously with no ill effects to my Acropora. This was in my 100g dt.

From another thread:
I erroneously dosed over 1ml per gallon a few weeks ago with no effect to Acropora. It did make a huge mess and I had to blow off the superfluous 'snow' off of the rockwork with a small powerhead. It looked like a tank full of milk and the fish would swim up against the glass and give me a 'what the heck' look.

Dang, that’s crazy. I wish we could ask him if his PO4 plummeted.

Potential effects of overdosing include excessively low phosphate.
Is there a possibility that calcium carbonate powder can add phosphates to a system? How can we be sure that their isn’t already phosphates absorbed inside that will leach into the tank?

Thst is possible, but would depend on the source of the material and is not super likely, IMO.

I’ll share my experience. I’ve been using calcium carbonate “coral snow” daily for little over a week at the recommended dose. Every other day with bacteria. A few days I did it twice. I don’t have a skimmer so I’m using DE filters for about three hours after dosing. This morning I did three times of the normal dose. phosphate before this dose 0.84 and after three hours 0.82 so not much help for phosphate but my tank is looking sharp.
