Sounds stupid.....I know, but I got to thinking.

I have a Purple Tang and a Foxface - that are pretty big boys...the Tang was a decent size what I got it, almost a year ago - but my Foxface, was a baby...now, they are almost the same size.

I make my own reef food (which is VERY protein rich) - nori, 2-3 a day.

Even my Yellow Boxfish, is a plumply little bugger! Lol

I mean, you always see skinny....or weak looking fish - but can fish be TOO fat? Maybe I should invest in some sort of aquatic treadmill?

I'm rehoming my Tang and Foxface, simply due to the fact that they are getting a little to sizeable for my tank.

Thoughts?

To say it bluntly, healthy is healthy and they’re either healthy or sick.
Sounds like you’re managing them well

I don’t think they can be too healthy but they could get too fat
Lol, they arent FAT...the the point of where they can't swim.

I see side shots of them....and they looks very good. I'm just shocked at how well they are growing. They are both very active and big eaters.

I mean, I've seen some pretty "fat" fish before - mine, just seem to grow well.

Fish that were going to get too big for your tank were always going to get too big for your tank, unless horribly mistreated.

It's possible for fish to get too fat, but you usually see it more in sedate freshwater fish that are overfed long-term. Reef fish don't tend to get too fat. There isn't any such thing as too healthy, though.

My fish are fat! They have a bulging area. I thought they was sick. I was given some fish and they was so much thinner. Longer, but thin.

Fat fish may or may not be healthy. But spawning fish are always healthy, fat or not.
Larger ppl are typically not healthy which applies to most any animal. Fat is bad and causes health issues in organisms that don’t utilize fat for a specific reason such as beats or shares, so to say a fat fish is healthy is def a misnomer.

No such thing as too "healthy" IMO. As a diver I noticed that all of the fish I see on the reefs are pleasantly plump or even fat so that's what I shoot for with my fish. They are happy, non-aggressive, and healthy. I have some fat tangs that have been in my reef for over ten years and I think that longevity is proof of their health.

As long as they are plump and thick, I wouldn't worry unless they were skinny. You're doing a solid job feeding them.

You aren't the only one to wonder about this! I was wanting to ask the same question. Can a fish be obese? I still think I'd rather see a chunky fish than a skinny fish any day!

We think of being overweight as being unhealthy in humans and other animals.

However fish are not the same as a human or a dog so I am not really sure we can say it’s unhealthy. Their fat distribution is likely different and they certainly evolved differently and are not even warm blooded animals.

I see fisherman catch “huge pigs” of fish and fat fish in the wild. I would say as long as you are feeeing them the right kinds of foods, they are probably healthy.

Besides I don’t see fat fish suffering from exhaustion or being physically tired. They still jet stream and swim all over the tank and handle strong power heads with ease.

Seals look fat but their meat is actually lean. It’s just not the same IMO.
