high likelihood. . not

Since ich is one of the most widespread fish diseases, the Ichthyophthirius protozoa are believed to be present in most aquarium environments. Being so common, the immune system of fishes have evolved to be able to protect them from the parasite under a healthy circumstance [3]. However, sometimes when the fish gets stressed, its immune system stops functioning properly, enabling the protozoa to infect it [5]. Few common causes of stress include:

  • Improper water and/or temperature condition in the aquarium
  • Fighting with other inhabitants of the aquarium
  • An improper or unhealthy diet [2]
  • Handling and shipping of a fish (e.g. from the pet store to your house)
Another, more obvious cause may be introducing an infected fish or decoration to a tank.
