Can I add drinking water to aquarium?

I ran out of fresh water and I need to dissolve my reef buffer in it. Can I use drinking water instead since it is not a very significant amount? What would happen if I mixed it with saltwater?

Hi emsilkina,

Taking water from the tap and using a water conditioner prior to mixing it with the Reef Buffer should do the trick. Although bottled water is likely just as safe once conditioned, there is always the chance that the bottling company adds harmful minerals to the water. If you typically use RO/DI water, mix the Reef Buffer in that instead. While I do not know the size of your tank, a cup of tap water should not cause your reef any damage at all. As for mixing the Reef Buffer into saltwater instead of freshwater, I would assume that this would not be problematic, however, I highly suggest sticking to exactly what the instructions say, which is mixing in freshwater in this case.

Yes but it can add things you may or may not want (depends on what drinking water). I assume you mean bottled water? Distilled water works if you can get a hold of that.

i meant bottled water such as Evian or Fiji. Is that the same thing as distilled water?

No. Evian and Fiji are both spring water. They’re going to have some sort of mineral content. Distilled water doesn’t have mineral content.

If its a small amount, it should not affect your aquarium.
