I have been in the hobby for about 8 months now. Started with a 20 gallon innovative marine and have since updated to a 40 gallon innovative marine a few months ago. I have a skimmer, filter sock, mp 10 powerhead and Kessil A360 light. I have heard so many things about how many fish I can have based on length of fish and gallon size or based on the activity of the fish. Not sure what to believe? I want to do it right.

So the question is........... Can I have more fish?

Here is what I currently have...

1 royal gramma
1 yellow watchman goby
1 mimic puffer
1 small marine better (2 inches)
1 tiny starry benny
1 scooter dragonett

Thank you!

Thank you!

the whole inches per gallon thing is really a very very broad baseline.
because you have a puffer. i would not advise anymore fish. they are pretty messy.

another thing to take in to account is adult size.

i can put a baby sand shark in my 265. doesnt mean he wont out grow it. im not saying any of your fish will outgrow your tank individually, but rather as a group... things will get small quick.

Thank you and just to clarify it is a mimic puffer - It is a file fish :)

yes and as with all puffers/filefish. messy.

30 gallons is the minimum tank size.
then add your others....

see what i mean? you MAY be able to get away with more... but tbh, id just upgrade to a 75 gallon.

otherwise you are in overstocked land where an intermediate-expert aquarist can navigate the challenges.

it is all up to you. i wont tell you adding fish is wrong. im just saying some headaches may shake out in the future.
