I have a 220g tang. I only have a yellow tang, hippo tang, 2 blue chromis and 6 anthias. I really would like to add a naso tang next. Would it be fine with the other tangs? The yellow and blue tang have been model citizens... for now atleast. They are both the same size probably 4 inches nose to tail? The naso I was thinking of adding was actually a little bigger than them. Just curious if people think it would go well.. or would it most likely be a bad idea. Like I said its a 220g tang with not all that many fish really. Plenty of room to swim and places to hide.

Naso acclimates well and gets along well with other tangs except Vlamingi in some cases as well as Unicorn as they are also classified as Naso

It should get along with the others. But, I probably wouldn't add one, for size reasons.

Which species?

They grow up to 18 inches...how big is your YT and how long has he been in the tank> He’s unlikely to take kindly to another tang addition. Depending on how long he’s been in there could be a challenge adding another tang.

Assume you’re talking about Naso liturgis (common ‘naso’). It’ll likely get a bit of aggression from them yellow tang, but nothing significant. Naso genus tangs generally get left alone. 6’ is a push for any Naso though. Probably won’t get to 18”, but it might get to 12”.

I keep hearing 18"...……… I ve had several and in my 660g, they seem to slow down at 8-9"
In the wild , yes maybe 18" and that's long term
If you get a 3-4" naso, youre good for a While

A fellow hobbiest had a 15” naso tang in a 500g FOWLR 7’ DT with beautiful streamers. Lost touch w/ him over the years so wonder if it ever got to 18”....however the point that many is that they get big. As far as the YT, if the naso is bigger he’ll still joust with him a bit but things likely will to calm down after some time IF they don't feel cramped. 220g’s is a nice size tank but if it is a standard, its still 6’ long. I personally love naso’s especially the blonde but would think long putting him in a 6’ tank as my plans always consider adult sizes when estimating stocking and quality of fish life. My opinion though so whatever you do good luck!

Since we are talking fish size there is a bit more to that story. Tank size was said to be 220 long? 72 inches then maybe? The problem doesn't stop with the fish or tank size but overall swimming room. Here you now need to factor in substrate, rock, corals, and then you will get a reasonable estimate if you should keep any fish of x, y, or z size.

Correct in that the fish isn't going to get 18 inches in most home aquari. However, it is going to grow and it will need swimming room. Even at 12 inches that is a pretty good sized fish which just reduced its effective swimming space substantially. I had a Lt. Tang that grew from about 3" when I purchased it to 8" in less than a year and felt it was too small for my 210 gallon. My 210 is only 54" in length though but 30" tall and deep...
