I have a 225g (6 foot long) mixed reef with the following fish currently in the tank:
  1. Male genicanthus bellus angel
  2. Gem tang
  3. White tailed bristeltooth tang
  4. Two female lyretail anthias (one is probably starting to transition to male)
  5. Exquisite wrasse
  6. Ornate leopard wrasse
  7. Radiant wrasse
  8. Melanarus wrasse
I'll be adding in the next week or two:
  1. Supermale lineatus wrasse
  2. Cleaner wrasse
In the next 1-2 months I'd like to also add:
  1. Royal gramma
  2. Blonde naso tang
  3. Female genicanthus bellus
  4. Midas blenny
When all the fish are in, can I safely add 3-5 Chrysiptera damsels? 3 or 5 a better option?

I'd prefer the Starcki but would also consider the Springeri if they are likely to get along better.

@i cant think, I hope you don't mind me tagging you here but I trust your fish opinions as you seem to know a lot (at least about wrasses!). What do you think?

I've read that the Chrysiptera sp. can be more peaceful than others.

Undoubtedly Chrysiptera is a genus of damsels that is peaceful, at least compared to the others. I think that C.springeri could be more territorial than the other damsels, I have never seen C.starcki in groups, what do you think of C.rollandi???

I have four damselfish in my tank; an azure and three blue devils. The azure was first in the tank with the three blue devils added together about 4 months later. It's been roughly 14 months of peaceful bliss (no issues with any of the damselfish).

So I'd say based on my experience, these two species are more on the peaceful side (their role is "tank sheppard" in keeping everyone else in their swim lanes).

I'd have no issues adding those to a system that sized. I have a lot of different damsels without any issues. I currently keep the following in various tanks without issue (even with some of them regularly spawning), and plan on adding more again from the 2nd list once my 180 is back up and running.

Chryisptera hemicyanea
Chrysiptera cyanea
Chrysiptera rollandi
Pomacentrus smithi
Pomacentrus similis
Neopomacentrus cyanomos
Neopomacentrus azysron
Chromis viridis
Acanthochromis polyacanthus

I've also kept these without aggression issues:
Pomacentrus vaiuli
Pomacentrus bankanensis
Pomacentrus alleni
Chrysiptera talboti
Chrysiptera springeri
Chrysiptera tricincta
Chrysiptera starckii
Chrysiptera taupou
Chromis bicolor
Chromis margaritifer
Chromis cyanea
Chromis vanderbilti
Chromis retrofasciata
Amblyglyphidodon ternatensis
Amblyglyphidodon curacao

The rollandi are nice....but I think my wife and I are really drawn to the striking blue/yellow combo.

What are your thoughts on the C.Azure?

Wow, you've had a ton of damsel experience!

Any thoughts on numbers? If I go with the starcki or azure, better to have just 1....or 3....or 5? My preference would be a small school so I'm leaning toward 3-5

They tend to squabble more with each other and leave others alone if in a group. I have a pair of azures in my 47 gallon, along with the 5 lyretails, and they don't bother anyone. They even share a small rock structure with my royal gramma pair, with no issues at all.

As a group, it helps spread aggression out between all of them, so nobody gets too roughed up. Start with juveniles, the largest will become male, the rest will stay female.

Azure is a beautiful fish, the yellow color on the diagonal makes it look elegant, a few years ago I had a small Chrysiptera taupou, it is the best blue color I have ever seen in a damselfish, but very territorial, or maybe it was bad luck and I got a bad tempered specimen.

Sounds fine. Springeri would be your best option. They will try to hurt each other at first to figure out whos boss.

@beesnreefs - Were you able to add the group of damsels you hoped for? If so, how’s it been so far? I ask because I am considering doing the same.

@2AReefer92 I haven’t gotten them yet. On order with @Dr. Reef scheduled for delivery early March so they can be the last fish I add.

Do you have the chromis vanderbilti in a group? Do they also tend to kill each other like blue-green chromis are they more peaceful?

I don't keep them anymore. It was in a previous setup, but yes, the vanderbilti were in a group of 5, and did fine with one another as well as the other chromis. I've never really had issues with chromis fighting amongst themselves, but I feed 4-6x daily, which definitely helps.
