Can i combine chaeto?

So i bought 4 clumps of chaeto, but can i combine them to form 1 big ball or will i kill them? If this is possible, would you reccomend it, or just keep them separate?

If you are going to have them all in the same refugium, they will grow into each other all on their own.. after a few harvests, you wont know one from the other anymore...

I dont have a refugium. I dont even have a sump for that matter. I keep them in a 20 gallon main display with a HOB filter and skimmer. Im just using them to keep the nitrates down because i have bimac that produces a large bioload.
