Biosponge like the white one?
I wouldn't over think / stress too much. You are fine with it, and in fact, I believe the black ones you have open to insert a sponge (they should have come with one)....or just buy some ceramic ones in a pouch...or just leave it alone.....your output sponge is enough....
 
I read a study recently on here, it was a link on a recent thread about matrix media. And the study found the number 1 item for surface area for bacteria was a normal kitchen pot scrubber

I would agree 100%. Thats what we used back in the day......5 for a $1. Horrible pink and blue colors......

Yes those above. They actually have more surface area for bacteria than bio balls, rings, ceramic media, sea chem matrix, and almost anything else

Which means great for reefs…and I’ll never use one in my kitchen again
