hey guys, so I want to kill this monti cap to create a a natural shelf for new frags. What would be the best way to kill it? It’s too big for kalk. I have considered the following ways:

~wrapping a plastic bag around it

~loosely glueing black abs plastic sheet cut to about the size of it right over the top for as long as it takes to die

~majano wand?

any other suggestions would be great.

My other concern is that killing it will release ammonia and or toxins, should I be worried about that? I’d be running carbon at least. I certainly don’t want to nuke the tank trying this.

why not just epoxy ur frags right on it? it'll start encrust onto the epoxy but hte frag will also branch further up/out. usually they work something out between themselves.

seems like a waste to kills such a nice looking specimen.

Thanks, I wish that were the case, but it kills other sps. It’s also starting to shade the Goni underneath, as well as a galaxia that actually doesn’t seem to mind living in the dark. Also I have plenty more of it in the reef.

Any sort of calcium or alkalinity solution pipetted directly on the coral should kill it. If you do not want to kill it all at once but are concerned about the coral encrusting over your frags you can spray the area of around the frag instead of the whole thing. Also watch your parameters so you aren’t dosing too much for your system!

Let me take care of it. I am the master of killing montis. Make me sad because they are some of my favorites. I like @Dkmoo suggestion. I would definitely try that one first.
It touched the green acro on the left once and took out a little branch right away. It also steamrolled a chili pepper monti before. It grows too fast for where it’s located. even if you’re right, by the time the frags grew in it will be hitting the glass

yes this ^

dont need to kill them - create a ring of safe zone for the frag.

overgrowth for the shading of the goni is easily remedied by breaking them off - either frag and trade them, or just throw them away.

thats a good idea killing it bit By bit. it Would take a long time though, which is why I was thinking of a way of depriving it of flow or light

I've been doing this for a while and every Time I do a piece of Freshly severed monti cap drops right into the goni and ticks it off. it also looks ugly, so I just want to kill it in place and let coralline blue clove and sps live on it

Time to hack it up and trade it. Gorgeous tank BTW. I just checked your build thread out. Awesome tanks!

Thanks man! I’ll have to check yours out too. Here’s a recent fts, as you can see I have plenty of mont! Any local Nj reefers feel free to take some off my hands for free! Half my substrate is chips of monti at this point.

That tank is what I want. Mine is hurting at the moment. I work way too much to take care care of a young tank. But I am slowly getting there. Hoping to get my upgrade done in June or July. I am going to add a 80 gallon cube and turn the 32g into a display fuge with a mangrove I am trying to grow out.

You have no lfs you can take that too and trade for in store credit? Even if only $50-$100 credit each run?

I personally would break it up into as big of pieces i could and sell the frags cheap. $5-$10 than whatevers left id hit with kalk or limewater paste. Should kill it. Dont use too much as it will effect your ph and alk. This im sure u know.
Other than that....id shade it to kill it too. A small flat shelf rock if you have or can find.

Just checked out your build thread. I feel your pain with work hours, I have a pretty rough schedule too, and attribute a lot of my success to the DOS and auto water changes. I don’t remember the last time i put a siphon hose in that tank! Really all I do is mix water every two weeks, feed the tank daily, and fill the ato with RO and kalk

Rip it out and sell or whatever and place something else there. It might break anyone. These aren’t super strong

Sadly no not really, my good local lfs closed a couple years ago and the only one worth driving to is about an hour away. There is one in the neighborhood but they can barely keep frags alive and when I brought them stuff in the past they didn’t want to discount stuff or buy anything, and I just gave them a bunch since I’d rather at least have them make a few bucks and hopefully stay open at least rather than throw it out. I think I’m going to try a combo of shading the middle with abs plastic and nuking the edges with kalk...
