I'll preface this by saying I'm only a year and a half into the hobby, so this may be a response that is specific to me.
If your question is simply "Can I make money from the hobby" I think the short answer is yes, whether you are talking net vs gross is a more complex answer.
If you have interest in the biology, chemistry, and animal husbandry, that will allow you to enjoy the substantial time , energy and financial commitments that you need to start with.
I make money on the side selling my excess macro algae and frags. I haven't gotten into raising fry yet but am looking to try by the end of the summer.
I don't make much, but my tanks are fuller and more colorful than my "outside" income alone would allow. I don't run top of the line gear, I build a lot of the stuff myself when I can (which has been a great experience in itself) but I still have enough growing in my tank that I have some to trade and sell.
