Hey!

I'm just wondering if any of you guys only feed Mysis?

At the moment, I switch between Pellets, Flakes, Seaweed and Mysis.

I was just wondering if I'd get away with only Mysis for my manual feed, whereas the algae and pods in the tank can act as a sustainable source for other nutrition's. Or just keep doing what I'm doing and spend that extra £5 on different foods?

Also, is the Mysis okay to defrost and sit in a tub for 24 - 48 hours? A full cube gets eaten in two days, but it starts to smell a little bit towards the end of the two days, is this harmful to the fish? Are they technically eating ammonia? Feels like a waste to tip away half a cube.

Hi Tiegan and firstly welcome to R2R!

It depends on your fish stock, for example tangs are basically vegetarian so need some form of ‘seaweed’ type food to keep them healthy like Nori. I use ocean nutrition formula 2 for the vegetarians

Try and vary the diet as much as you can, I feed frozen mysis, brine shrimp, blood worms, most with additives like garlic, omega etc to vary the diet to try as best I can to give my fishy friends a good and healthy diet. I use the 250g Gamma frozen blocks which are better value for money

I don’t defrost anything though, it goes from frozen straight into the tank and defrosts in there, and you will be fine doing that.

As said above, depends on your stocking list. Some fish need veggies, and others are strictly meat eaters.

With that said, I feed veggie max and TDO chroma boost(pellets) in an automatic feeder 3 times a day. Then I manually feed a chunk of mysis, and small chunk of LRS reef frenzy daily.

Why not just cut the cube in half? Or buy the flat packs of mysis that way you can cut off the size of the peice you need(it's also cheaper for the flat pack by volume). If it smells funny, why would you feed it to your fish? If human food smells funny, we usually throw it out.

I would not just feed one type of food.

I chop up the cubes when frozen, some cubes such as lobster eggs I can get 6 pieces from, some only 4, then put in a little freezer tub and store in the freeze, take one out and defrost in a little rodi water and suck up with a turkey baster and add to the tank.

Frozen mysis or brine shrimp are very low in nutrients : Omega One 3.7% protein, 0.44% fat, 92% moisture.
Pellets are much higher : New Life Spectrum 36.0% protein, 7.0% fat, 7% fiber 10% moisture.

If your fish are very active, they probably need more protein than what they can get from frozen mysis
