Can I put this in my reef tank???

I know this is a very strange question and alot of people will reply not to do it.....but im wondering if i can put live bioluminescent dinos in my tank so when the lights are off the waves from the powerhead will make it glow?

Ok first .... amazing question and thought process here. I love the idea.

However, dinos are the last thing you want to add. Is there a bioluminecent Nannochloropsis, tetra, or some other non invasive phytoplankton?

Also I dose a liter of a mixture of those two phytos a week. I know that my sock and skimmer remove a ton of it. Unless you were able to culture that biolum phyto then it would come and go.

It depends , some Dino’s are extremely toxic and can create the red tide while others are just ugly lol

Carolina.com is an actual website that has tons of stuff for the scientific field. They have all sort of algae cultures and other stuff. So you can go direct to that site to check it out.

As for putting that in your tank, I would not put anything in my tank that I did not know exactly what it was intended for. But it is your tank.

They uptake ammonia and nitrate and only glow when agitated. From what I’ve seen they seem like a good option for a reef tank some strains are deep ocean however. Interestingly all photosynthetic corals have dinos - that's what zooxanthellae are.

There are 2,294 living dinoflagellate species. Only some can cause problems. Zooxanthellae, found in our coral, is a type of dino, and it's essential for coral survival.
