As the title says. There is a really nice 150gallon acrylic tank for sale for $200. The only thing I don’t like it that the top has three holes drilled in it. Is it possible to replace just the top of an acrylic tank?

Is the top you are reffering to bonded to the rest of the tank. It can be done if cut out and new acrylic rebonded.

You should be able to cut it off and do a new top. Just use the appropriate acrylic/plastic blade and you should be ok. Ideally you would want to make a removeable lid for the overflowbox.

Another question. Does it even need the top? I seems to be on the inside of all the walls

I'm not experienced in working with acrylic, but it definitely needs the "top". That rim at the top is what braces the sides from bowing out and breaking. Reference "Euro-bracing" to learn about the function of the brace pieces.

You could replace the top, but working with acrylic is not as simple as some make it seem. It would be easier to just cover the holes you don't need with bonded acrylic or some other cover.
