Can I get rid of my hob filter? I have an aqua maxx 1.5 hob skimmer. I don’t want to buy anymore filters for it. I could downsize to a 10-20gal long hob and run all carbon ? Let’s hear your thoughts R2R

Thanks Steve

Just to clarify, you're running a single HOB skimmer that you're thinking of ditching, correct?
*not an HOB power filter that you want to ditch and another HOB skimmer

I run a Seachem Tidal 110 HOB filter on a 40 gallon sumpless tank but, honestly, not sure why,,, other than it seemed like something to do and allows me somewhere to run bags of media if I want to, like GAC or something,,, although I rarely do.

My inference from reading (on R2R) is that skimmers help with aeration so that'd be the only thing I'd wonder about.
*I've never run a skimmer and nothing's dying from lack of oxygen (or CO2 build-up or whatever) in my tank but have wondered about this aspect

Yeah i only ran this for the same reason and to rid the gunk same as you but it’s just a lot of money for filers 4 dollars a pop for a week if not more

Oh,,, yeah,,, if HOB skimmer is working (without overflow issues), I'd personally ditch the HOB power filter.

I don't understand the "money for filters" statement as I spend close to nothing for filters:
-- Dual-density pond filter material probably cost me $10-$15 on Amazon and I've been using same roll for 2-2.5 years (finally almost out)
-- Sponge (I guess?) is first thing in my Tidal filter and I just rinse that (weekly at best,,, monthly at worst) and I don't see that deteriorating in the foreseeable future.

I think I’m going to

I use the ones with carbon in them large filters

But because of this I will no longer have to worry about spending the money on it because the filter will be off my tank this week lol thanks for the help

The only thing I would think of is what are your plans for removing suspended solids ?

The skimmer with collect organics .
The wave makers will push food . And detritus and poop around the system but with no mechanical filtration you would have nothing ….
Other than water changes

This was the other issue I’m dealing with unless I just run the small hob and just put floss in it

I don’t run any media filtration on my tanks and only change water a couple times a year. If skimmer is working properly there is no need.

I’m also kind of worried because my tank is in the nano realm hard to make decisions when everything is running smoothly
