Can I rinse out a sponge in QT?

I'm afraid it's going to get clogged up from all the uneaten food. If I rinse it will I also remove the live bacteria?

You could rinse it in a bucket of saltwater if you want to be on the safe side. As long as you don't let it dry you should be fine. An ammonia alert badge helps too

I rinse them in old tank water during water changes. Squish 'em in the bucket, replace the sponge and dump the bucket.

^^ Agree with rinsing/wringing it out in SW; FW or tap water will probably kill a lot of the bacteria living in the sponge.
