If I have a little bit of live rock/chaeto/ulva..

Do I even need a filter? Will these things hold enough bacteria to keep out the ammonia?

Ive lost fish already once, and when I add phyto/pods I dont want them to just get sucked up, so im just trying to be cautious to not lose more livestock.. thanks in advance

Well gonna need a lot more detail to give an educated answer on the topic. Let's hear what size tank, livestock, what your filter is, how much rock/sand you have, what are your tank goals, etc.

Alrighty..

55g DT
37g Sump
(I have not yet connected these tanks, but will im the next few days)

Currently
17 thinstripe crabs (may release)
3 cerith snails
2 nas snails
8 margarita snails
1 fire fish
1 bi-color blenny
2 clownfish

I plan at some point to breed the clownfish and add coral etc.. but that isnt happening just yet.

What's your filter -- some type of hob? How much live rock you have (lbs)?

My filter is a marine land submersible 290g/hr

Only about 15 pounds of rock at the moment, but picking up more each week to add

I would not remove any filters or pads just yet.
Let your tank mature a bit. Add more rock and let it mature.
Ahh excellent.. I have a deep sand bed on top, and gravel in the sump. I will do that though, thank you!
