Can I upgrade my lighting??

No very easy.

Ideally you want to get an RO system and then you do not have to buy water just salt mix. See below.

But for now you can buy purified water from the store or local fish store, avoid those purified water machines though.

Get your salt mix. Instant Ocean/IO is affordable and a quality salt for your current needs. Mix 1/2 cup to each gallon of water for a SG of 1.023, mix more salt to achieve a higher SG value.

Stir or swish the container, in a larger container you can use a power head. Let sit over night, try to match temp and SG to display values and preform the water change.

A water change of 1 gallon per week should be sufficient. The amount you change depends on your bio-load and feedings. Keep bio-load low and hence less feedings.

Hope that helps.

What's the difference between Instant Ocean Aquarium Salt and Instant Ocean Reef crystals??

Reef Crystal mixes a little higher in the trace elements such as Calcium. It's a good salt, I have used it and like it. For some reason my Magnesium value kept drifting up so I went back to IO.

You can get some really great salt mixes, but you pay more. IO does what I need and I have a small tank with dosing so I am adjusting the trace elements anyway.

So just go with Instant Ocean Aquarium Salt just to try it out

So I just did my first 5 gallon of saltwater and I have a power head running inside the gallon how long before I can add some to my tank because some of my water evaporated already

You can add it after a couple minutes if the crystal from the salt mix are no longer visible and the water is clear. Take the power head out and let the water settle, then add it to the tank, preferably in the back chambers. Remember you do not have to do such large water changes.
