I'm helping a friend do a new 180 gal build. I have this pump which came from an above ground swimming pool. Do you think it is safe to use? As you can see, it has the chlorine bin built in. I thought if we used it, that might be a good place to put something like ChemiPure. Thoughts? My concern is past use with chlorine.

I would not as it may have a nasty surprise in store.

Yeah... I kinda feel the same way. I'd want to be sure that the chlorine is completely removed. Hello Randy? LOL

Does it smell like chlorine? Shouldn't be any mystery to that. ;)

What do you have in mind for it? Looks like it would be too big for 99.9% of aquariums out there.

Yeah... it is a bit of a monster. LOL

But a 180 gal display tank with a 40 gal long partitioned as a sump figures to be about 200 gal of total water volume.

Initially, there was discussion about using 2 pumps; 1 for the return and 1 in a closed loop for circulation. Then this pump came up in the conversation.

Well as with all pool pumps they are pressure rated vs flow so you won't be getting a ton of flow through it but you can be safe knowing that no matter how long of a pipe run you use you will get some nice flow out of it with minor decrease.

You will be able to run all kinds of manifolds and closed loops out of it without breaking a sweat.

I assume your buddy's sump is going to be in a whole different area? Because that sucker is going to be loud.

Gotcha....would be OK as a closed loop, but still WAY oversized for that tank.

Do you know the make/model or nominal flow rating?

With chlorine having been run through it, I wouldn't chance it myself in a saltwater tank. As @mcarroll stated, it's allot of pump for anything but a very large tank whatever the pressure or flow rating. JMO

Yeah... I said it would be an EXPENSIVE pump to run.
