Can I use travertine as frag discs?

I just found a big box of travertine back splash tiles that a builder left. They are mounted on that screening that holds them all together and lined up. Are they safe to use?

Do I have to do anything before using them or just peel them off the backing?

I would deff pull off the back and try clean off any glue that may be on there. Then probably cure them in some saltwater with a piece of live rock for a couple weeks.

I had regular tile with out the backing. I would soak the in out sump to ey the air out of them and you may see some algea on the for the first few weeks but my coralline quickly took over

I have not used them, but I seriously considered it a while back. Reading around on the net, some expressed concerns with pieces that had dark inclusions or other coloration as these are formed by concentrations of "other than carbonate" minerals and organics. On the other hand, Netta obviously has had no problems - I think I might soak them for a bit - but let us know if you use them and how they work out.

I have used them for years with no ill effects. I do try to find light colored ones though.

I'm probably going to give some a shot. I know I definitely have seen red brick in an established tank. I thought it was nutty but it was covered with coralline and crustaceans.

I don't think they need to be cured they are mined from coast lines etc... I would just put them in the sump for a week or so... IMO

I get the 3/4" squares that are on a larger 12 square grid. Cur off what you need and soak in hot water. The glue rubs right off. I have been using them for at least 4 years with no ill effects in my tank. They are a heck of a lot cheaper than production frag tiles or plugs.

Hhaha me to my brother works for a tile
Company so I get the samples. Haha and my sump flooded me basement last week so I'm gonna need a bunch of tile to re do my floors lol
