i have using FM red x which contain salicylic acid for weeks but the cyano does not seems to stop

does it really work against cyano ?

I don’t know but would be somewhat surprised given that salicylic acid has limited effect on other bacteria and usually isn’t the first choice...

You could test it by taking a small mat of cyano from
Your tank in a cup and add a few drops of the solution and observe what happens. For example peroxide will dissolve cyano very quickly, some antibiotics will degrade it a bit slower etc...

I’d be surprised if it has a useful effect at the concentrations attained in a reef tank.

98% likely to stop your cyano logged in giant work threads: take your entire tank apart and clean the sandbed out totally in one pass. If the tank is too large to do that, press on with various water dosers. If it’s not too large, it works just about every time we show in work threads

Great question because manufacturers rarely if ever provide scientific data showing the effectiveness of their product.

I did a quick search on cyanobacteria and salicylic acid. The references studied pelagic cyanobacteria, not the type we have growing on surfaces which grow in a mat or thick film and are very resilient. While salicylic acid showed an inhibitory effect in these studies, this does not mean it will work in an aquarium situation. I give this product a low probability of success.

If you decide to test the product on a piece of cyanobacteria outside the aquarium (as suggested), make sure you have a control, an identical container with the same water and lighting but not salicylic product. As resilient as these mats are in the aquarium, they can disperse within hours when removed from the aquarium, making it appear as though the salicylic acid actually did something.

How bad is your cyano? How big is the tank?

Hydrogen peroxide will work, especially on localized problems. Will work on the whole tank too.

For heavy, more localized mats, best is to use something like Julian’s tool and burn the mats directly. If the problem is more widespread then start with 1ml 3% peroxide (can get at a pharmacy) per 10gal every 12hrs. According to Burgess this can be safely raised to 5ml or more (for oxygenation at least) without impact to corals or fish. If you have shrimp, it’s not a good solution as they seem to be very sensitive.

Hi David. Sorry for the delay, I usually check in every few days to the forums. What all have you done in regards to treatment? Have you downloaded and followed the HTU from the website? How many hours are your lights running? T5, LED, MH? Bulb age if T5, MH? Are you running UV, adsorbers, reactors?

We have customers that have had great success treating their tanks with the product, but have had a handful whom had a very severe outbreak that it took some time and had a few other issues within the tank that was leading to the trouble.
