Can someone explain kalk stirrers to me?

I've used kalkwasser since I started this hobby 15 years ago. I was always under the impression that after mixing, the powder should be allowed to settle to the bottom then the clear water is added to the tank. What is the purpose of stirring it up again? Does the powder that had settled out get added to the tank after being stirred?

Hey and hi,

Stirrers are actually pretty cool and straight forward. Avast marine makes a quality one. The concept is to load it with a 1/2 to 1 cup of kalk. The reactor fills with ro water. The water gets saturated with kalk, the remainder of kalk not used stays on bottom. Usually an ATO or doser feeds fresh water into the reactor which feeds the saturated kalk into the sump. That dilutes the reactor water to dissolve more kalk. That keeps going until the kalk is used up.

Hope I explained it ok, It is a good way to control dosing more consistently and less work.

The stirrer rotates very slowly. Enough to keep the water above the slurry saturated but not enough to kick it up. Works really well.
