Was told it was a mussa or mycedium coral but I'm not sure about that. What do you think?

Definitely not a mussa, as those are Atlantic only. Judging from the flesh texture and the skeleton underneath, it is not a mycedium either. I can narrow it down to the families merulinidae and lobophylliidae. My best guess is Moseleya latistellata.

How do you know it's not from the Atlantic?
(Not arguing, just curious)

But how do you know it didn't come in on maricultured rock and/or it's not a frag of a colony that has been in "captivity" for a number of years?
First of all, no stony corals from around Florida (where most maricultured rock comes from) look like that. Second of all, you can see some skeleton and it is on a frag plug, which means it was fragged from a larger colony. If he had kept this coral for a long time, he would probably have showed us the larger colony. He said was told that the coral was either a mussa or a mycedium, which means he probably bought it from his LFS. If he bought it from his LFS, the coral is most likely not from the Atlantic, as not just the collection, but also the sale of Atlantic stony corals is illegal.
