So I bought about a half dozen Zoanthid frags today. I am still relatively new to this hobby. But I think I did everything correctly.

I wanted to place one on a flat rock on the bottom. I have a "tall" wedge tank (I am 6'2" and can barely reach the bottom with the tips of my fingers). So I thought it'd be easier to just take the rock out, glue it on, then place it back.

When I moved the rock I saw these under it. They were not getting any light exposure. I did photoshop this image, because for some reason it is REALLY hard to take color accurate pictures of aquariums even with really good phone cameras. I wanted to make sure the picture depicted the color accurate;y. They are this creme/Yellow color. They have what looks like little tubes coming out. Each of these is about the size of a quarter.

Anyone know what these are? Is it something I need to be concerned about? Is it a coral or something else? I thought all corals required access to lighting of some kind.

Sponges! I have some in my tank, they don’t bother anything and if you think they are unsightly it’s quite easy to scrub them off.

Oh cool! No, I actually like them. I know the standard in this hobby seems to be "coral display case" tank design. Which I also like. But I wanted something that looks naturalish and has lots of misc life in it. Sponges are perfect.

As long as they don't take over the tank. But these have been in there at least 18 months, so I am guessing they won't do that.

Hey, I 100% agree! I love the natural look. Reefs are more than just coral, there’s tunicates, barnacles, oysters, macro-algae and sponges. I love seeing tanks with variety.
