Can too much flow inhibit polyp extension?

So I left my Nero 5 off for about 2 hours today and I noticed some crazy polyp extension with my SPS and other random corals...

I have a Nuvo 40 with just a Nero 5... I attached my schedule to the thread.

My SPS for the most part always has polyp extension but never this much... also my Goni never ever has that much polyp extension....

I was under the impression that many LPS and SPS corals likes tons of random flows... for the most part

ha that is a comical length but idk I don't have much experience with sps except for maybe gsp even then those like moderate to strong flow because I put my gsp in front of my outflow of my filter and it loves it

I mean... can’t really compare GSP to anything else. You can put that under a rock and it’ll be happy lol

In nature wave is slower at night than in during the day. You also run your flow lower at night. So coral usually associate low flow to night, and they also extend polyps at night. It doesn't necessarily mean lower flow is better for them.

Hmm makes sense. I might see what happens tomorrow. I toned down the Nero 5 to see what happens ....

What you are seeing is feeding response. These are most evident on sps like efflo! If anyone that’s watching this has any turn your flow way down at night with all the lights off and you will see clear, glass like, long, ex large polyps extend out that look almost nothing like it’s normal polyps! It’s awesome!!! There are many species that do this but efflo does it very consistently.

So... should I drastically lower my flow at night? The in the morning bring it back up?

I know some people that run that way with great success. I however don’t fiddle with my flow. It may be something I look into in the future when I get an ipv6 and tie my xf250s into my apex but even then if I was to lower flow at night for anything other than nighttime feedings it would probably only be ever so slightly.
