I'm wondering whether Varios pumps can be used vertically, with inlet facing up. My Sicce ADV pumps can be used this way, and this orientation would solve a tricky plumbing situation for me.

Thanks

As long as the water inket isn't trying to pull water into the pump, I don't see why not, but a quick call to CoralVue (the distributor) should answer definitively

It's to be used in a closed loop system, with flow out the center of the back of the tank to be returned into bottom of the tank. Hose hangs down from back of tank, so having the pump "hanging" from the hose via the inlet would work beautifully. Outlet would T off to send flow to CL returns at opposite ends of the tank through the bottom of the tank.

Probably although they are not designed for that position. The main things to assure it is submersed for water cooling at all times

Since they build a skimmer using the VarioS 6 installed vertically, they must not expect problems. Slightly different usage scenario (with a needlewheel) though

Dont see how it would affect anything. Especially setup as a closed loop as you described.

Really good point! And impeller down, too! As noted in post, Sicce ADV pumps can be used vertically per the insert user instructions, although the instructions do specifically say not to orient it with the inlet facing down.

Pump has been ordered and it will be nice to get it installed. At the moment, rock is sitting in the tank on perforated plates supported 1" above bottom of tank. Once the pump is installed so that I can get the closed loop running, I'll cover with substrate and really circulate water around the rock. (As it is, even with plates shifted two feet toward one end of tank so that there is wide open access to the space below the plates, a sample of water I draw from underneath the plates really had that funky "SOMETHING'S decaying" smell to it!"
