Can you have to much sump?

My son has a 5 gallon fluval chi. I have a spare 55 gallon tank that's scratched by my now 4 year old. I figured I could run a pretty sweet refugium full of cheato and xenia. My son just wants a black clownfish. I was planning on using old water from wc on my reef tank.

A display running an extremely oversized sump is my dream. IMO....no such thing as too big a sump. More water volume = more stable system with more possibilities.

I once saw a 20g shallow clam tank that had a 500g reservoir and 100g sump attached. LOL (It adds stability)

Short answer: No.

Would wc schedule be affected by this? Could I get away with dosing and once a month wc?

I used to have a 300gallon tank with 180 gallon tank under for the fug and 2 rk2 bins connected to it. I loved it water was always stable.

As far as water changes go u have to watch ur water quality.
If ur doing once a month u might want to go bigger then the normal 10% and maybe do a 20 or 25% water change.

I wouldn't use only water from ur reef tank water changes. Remember ur getting rid of that water bc it's not the cleanest.
I would do a 50/50 of ur old water to some fresh mixed water.

5gallon tank may be a little small for clowns, Id recommend some smaller gobies, shrimp ect. But with the 55gal that would be a sweet setup. My dream is to have a 2-4gal filled with Nice Acro's with a 30-40gal sump plummed in. Bigger the water volume, easier to keep parameters in check.
