Can you make calcium chloride for two part by just mixing water, pickling lime, and muriatic acid together? I think you might be able to save a significant amount of money if you can.

Why so much effort? 2 things.

1. Calcium chloride is really cheap and you can get it from multiple sources if you don't want to spend the money for Pharma grade
2. You can just use pickling lime as Kalk or just use Kalk which is also really cheap

Just be careful. I used melt or heat. We use to use it a lot in the 90’s. It’s a driveway de-icer. It has small traces of copper in it. Killed a bunch of my sps over time. The copper builds up ever so slowly.

I'm not sure how much effort this would take. It looks like it may just take 3 measurements instead of 2, campared to just using calcium chloride. It may be more complicated than that, I don't know. This may be the cheapest way to add calcium chloride(also, a lot of the lower priced calcium chloride might not be pure enough). I want to just use two part right now.

Pretty sure he's talking about calcium hydroxide (kalk). Calcium chloride is used as sidewalk de icer and also as a calcium additive in reef tanks.

Not sure why you would want to do this calcium chloride typically is cheaper as you buy it in bulk quantities.

Bulk Reef Supply sells a 35 pound bucket of calcium chloride for $99.99, you can get 1 pound packets of Mrs. Wages pickling lime for $3.00 or less each with no taxes. I think the pickling lime has at least twice as much calcium for it's weight. If someone can easily do what I'm asking about, I believe it would definitely be worth it, especially if I gave a good comparison .

I'm certainly no chemist, but I can tell you if you add muriatic acid to kalk(pickling lime), you will certainly not have calcium chloride.

Pretty sure @Randy Holmes-Farley should chime in on this one.
By adding muriatic acid, you're essentially turning CaOH into CaCl2. It actually does work, I think, at least in theory.

Yes, but if you buy food grade or other high purity muriatic acid, it may not be cost effective.
