can you pick out the jason fox nem?

just for sunday fun --

we bought a bta from jason fox's website, for $200 (as an afterthought to a small but expensive frag order). so arguably a 'name brand' nem. it was RED colored on his website. we thought... it must be decent if JF is selling it.

we had a 'normal' bta, from a local reefer's tank breakdown. that was free.

both nems have been in our system for at least 4 months, and have not morphed color.

can you tell which is which?

The difference is clear, the one laughing at you is the JF.
That aside, it must be the one higher up in the tank (on the right.)

Sorry for the expensive lesson. I never expect any coral I buy online to look like the photo. I'm shopping for a crazy exotic Rock Flower Anemone and I'm willing to pay the price. But I have to see it in person before I'll spend the money.

Nice BTAs!

I'm wondering how much the 'normal' BTA would have cost at full retail price. I have purchased nems from $30 dollars to $700 and the more expensive ones do look more vibrant under actinic lighting. I have also seen some of the high-end $1500 + dollars BTA at trade shows, and I can tell you they look way better than anything I have in my tank. I'm not saying they are worth the price, but do look much better than the everyday BTA you see at the LFS. That said - I think it's a little like buying a TV... When you're in the store and comparing two TVs within a similar price range you might see a slight difference in picture quality, but if you compare them away from each other (different aisles or stores) you might not notice the difference. Now if you compare a 720p HD TV to a new 4K you will know which one looks better regardless if it's side-by-side or not. At the end of the day, if you're happy with the purchase that's all that matters.

On a side note - I just received two shipments of corals on the same day. One from Jason Fox, and the other one was from another prominent online vendor. I could easily tell which one came from the other vendor when I dipped the corals twice with coralRx and Bayer dip due to all the pest that came off. I only find a small serpent starfish in the JF batch, which I wouldn't consider a pest. For me, the extra cost (within reason) is worth it to have corals that have a high chance of being pest free. just my .02
