My wife gives me a hard time when I buy wild caught fish so I am trying to find out where I can get some captive bred. I already have a couple of clowns and a banggai cardinal (and a few other wild caught).
There are only a couple of lfs here in Edmonton and they don’t really get a lot of captive bred fish in stock besides what I’ve already bought.

where are you gretting your captive breds, Canadians? Anyone getting them shipped?
Thanks

Good question :)

I'd love to know as well. My two local LFS have no stock at all and they don't know when they will be getting anything in the future. This isn't just captive bred this is anything saltwater. I live near Detroit so it was easier to just go across the border and pick up fish but with the border closed that isn't possible. I've been looking at J&L Aquatics they do have a decent selection of captive bred but the shipping cost is holding me back.

Thanks for the bumps!

Mac - I ordered some dry goods from jl and they were great. They don’t have much stock right (go figure, stupid covid) but I didn’t look into the cost of shipping. I’m obviously closer than you are but I’m sure it’s not a lot cheaper.

there must be some Canadians buying captive bred! Where you at??? :)

Any Americans with a connection to captive bred and know how to export them?

Unfortunately our selection is very sparse, especially in Alberta I’ve noticed. I’m just south in Calgary, and have a hard time finding any fish, let alone corals. JL aquatics is good for dry goods, and I believe they ship fish as well.

ora exports to europe so i'd think they'd export to canada?

i'd shoot biota and ora a message on facebook and see what they say, they might be able to get you into contact with someone. they've both responded to my questions on there before

I think marine experience has a larger selection of cb fish in Edmonton, (personally I like to go to aquarium illusions my go to lfs healthy fish, and fair prices.) Though lots of fish just aren't available cb.

Have you checked out great white reefs there local in Calgary, beautiful peices too.

You could check out Fragbox in Ontario but again the shipping costs.

Many stores in Canada do carry ORA fish. For more specialty stuff try Candy Corals. I know they've had Poma labs shipments and Bali Aquarich among others. I recall them advertising captive bred purple tangs semi recently although I'm sure they're all long gone now, Afnan may at least be able to give you an idea of what's available.

Another good option could be Coral Reef Shop. Red can probably help you out.

Finally while this is not a good option I am starting to raise lightning maroon clownfish and hopefully will have some for sale in 2021 :) Not to get ahead of myself because I am a newbie at breeding but I do have many different tanks so a few more for breeding fish are hardly out of the question.

Thank you all!!! Lots of places to check out and I will take a look. At this point, shipping is just going to be what it is and will be the reason I justify buying multiple fish-haha. She’s decided captive bred is more important than price (within reason of course!)

Matt - great idea. Will do.

Josh - I go to aquarium illusions for most of my stuff too and will check the other you recommended.

I live a half hour drive from J&L and I love their livestock. They have a nice, clean shop, where the fish are very well taken care of. Their staff are knowledgeable and seem to really care about the welfare of the animals. I highly recommend them.

I wanted to send an update your way along with a thanks. I emailed ORA and they connected me with a local here in Edmonton who happened to be getting an order from them (arrived today). (Not sure why I couldn’t find his business via google)
Sometime next week I’ll be picking up a captive bred green mandarin! I’m so excited as I think I’m getting a healthy fish and my wife will have nothing to complain about.

Hi may I have the name or contact of the store? Would like to order a captive bred Mandarin as well.

New Dawn aquaculture. Owner is Mitchell and he is great to deal with. Not sure what he has for stock right now but he was in the process of ordering from ORA at the beginning of January. Best to email him through the website as he only updates his inventory once he has it in his store.

+1. Great communication.

Mitchell advises that he just got a shipment from ORA, so I'd say it's a good time to check with him about livestock availability.
