So my candy cane coral has been perfectly fine every day it's been puffy and happy until tonight. Out of nowhere a head is completely gone and nothing but perfectly white bone is left. Any ideas what causes something like this?
Salinity 1.024 (need to get that up)
Alk 9.0
Calcium 400
Temp 79
Nitrate 1
Phos .01
Magnesium (havent checked in a while)

Flow and light havent been a problem because it's been there for like 5 months and started as one head.
I do have a very minor dino outbreak the only thing I could think is that it was is a galaxia coral stinging it but the longest sweepers dont even reach. Also the tissue damage is very clean and shows no signs of tears just recession

Temp - 98 ?????
Alk a little high and what is PH ?
Get salt up to 1.026 as I see youre working on it

My sps and euphillia have been perfectly fine as well I also don't have any live stock that would pick at it. Just clownfish and a scooter blenny
However I did get rid of 2 pep shrimp this morning that were eating my sps.

Could your peppermint shrimp have been the culprit? One of mine ate my macromussa and situation sounded very much like yours.

I honestly just now thought of it as I was typing my livestock. It's a very clean death there is 0 sign of tissue and the bone is white which means it's not a slow death I'm guessing.
Would you think peppermint shrimp would do that? (When I say I got rid of them I gave them to a fellow reefer that had aiptasia like i did and warned him about the sps picking)

I've had this twice. Low mag and low nitrates/phosphates. (Low nitrates phos assisted in a 6month dino attack too.

I target 7ppm nitrate and 0.5 po4 as minimums. Usually prefer 10 and 0.1

Mixed sps tanks

Best way to add nitrates? I've cut my skimmer to half.

My clownfish liked to host in my candy cane to the point where they wore away the flesh. have you noticed the same with your clowns?

I have noticed that when they do that I usually put them in a bit more flow , that usually for me helps them open back up, and then I’ll feed them some reef roids and usually there good as new

Mine are shriveled because it's just about lights lit for the night. The main concern is an entire head is dead

I actually dose and my skimmer has been off 2 months now.

I use pure KNO3 powder for Nitrate and PO4 for my phos. Daily dosing. The mixture is somewhere on this site too. Test lots if you dose and research the level you wish to maintain., but personally my sps and other corals saw much better color once dosing. I have very few fish in my 90

I've used seachem flourish for nitrates b4 too.
