Candy cane hitchhiker

I got these candy canes about a month ago. I dipped and scraped all this red goo off. It was almost like a sponge or mound of jellyfish . It's back and I'm curious if anyone knows what it is

It’s either a sponge of coralline algae, either way it’s harmless.
