Meaning the lights and heater turn off 3-6 times per day for 2-4 hours?

This is certainly not meeting the lighting or temperature requirements of the coral (if your ambient doesnt stay above 75 degrees year round) and you should think about doing one of the following.

1. Using a properly sized battery backup system to backup the tanks load when your power is out.

2. Re-evauating requirements for a reef tank and living photosynthetic creatures, then asking yourself, can you maintain these requirements 24/7 in perpetuity?

If that is the case (you only have heat and light for the tank at certain parts of the day) you could consider keeping temperate water livestock (assuming ambient temp is not enough), could also consider placing tank some where it will get direct sunlight (by a window or otherwise).

I was going to recommend NPS coral but then thought of the heat as well.

Your idea is another swell one!

Thank you for the reply I do appreciate it we do have a 3kwv inverter installed for now that runs the light and 2pumps but not the heater and other pumps as it does take a lot of power

What do your night time temps get down to at the moment?

Do you notice the tanks temp swinging? If so do you know the general range?

Take a pic of the tank and the candy cane and post it up. If your able to run you lights and a couple pumps when power is out that shouldn't be affecting the corals so much. I have a good size generator I bought for a planned 8 hour power outage that was a few years ago just so it can power my whole tank and my wifi and TV. A power outage under 4 hours I don't worry about.
