Hello guys,

So we were having a small argument over our new addition, an candy coral. They say it’s dead and I say it’s alive. The picture is of both of the candy canes we bought. One is doing really well. Is the other dead? I say it isn’t. Thanks ahead of time, this site has helped me tons

Unfortunately I agree with the above statements. Can you provide us with some more information to see if we can help you save the bottom one? Generally these guys like low light and low flow. What are your parameters, lighting, and how high in the tank do you have it mounted?

Let me take a picture so you can get a better perspective. I would say it’s midway thru the tank below my right power head. I have a RSM 250, I’ll post a picture to better give an idea. Water parameters are at 77-78 f constantly(have a chiller installed as well), salinity at 1.024, nitrates/nitrate at 0, ph at 8.4, ammonia at 0 it has T5 lights (6 of them) . I just tested everything again. Thanks again guys

Ok nitrates at 0 is not good .. needs to be some nitrates in your water , also you never mentioned your po4 / phos .. if this is also 0 you run the risk of running your tank to clean which will open the door for Dino’s which you really don’t want !!
Nice aquascape !!!

I’m testing the nitrate. I’ll post a picture of the result. I miss read. I believe it’s at 5.00 but I’ll update in a bit. Currently I have these tests right now, the ones I just ran out of get here tomorrow. Thanks for all the help. I thought I messed up in the aqua scape, so thanks a lot lol

The thing with an Aquascape is its ever changing !! Always looks different when you start adding coral ... plus you’ll find you will probably want too add more rock when you run out of space for coral ... :D

I’m bad with colors, but I believe it’s 5.0. The yellow it first starts of with looks like the top reading.

Backstory to the corals. We went to a different store this time. Both those candy cane corals came from there and we got 2 purple fire fish . One which we haven’t seen since he came in and the other is out and about doing well. What do you guys think ? Is the purple fire fish dead or still hiding? It’s been about a solid 7 days now

They both look like toast to me.. How old is your tank? It appears you have lava rock in your tank which could be high in metals like iron and causing your issues .. Healthy candy canes should look like photo below..

Hard to tell is there a chance he’s jumped , check around the tank .. there’s not much room to hide in your tank but he could be in a hole .. but 7 days is long ..

He couldn’t have jumped, It’s enclosed. I thought they couldn’t hide too, or at least I would be able to find it’s spot. however on the rock to the right side, they go in there and can’t be seen at all. It must a be decently hollow rock. I’ve checked everywhere, you can’t even see the other one once it goes into hiding. Hopefully it comes out.

That does look a lot different. I bought a existing set up 2 months back. I kept 40% of the Water and all the live sand it had. I believe the tank has well over a year running . The lady that sold it wasn’t the last owner, her son was. He tried to make her care for it but a lot went wrong lol. She wouldn’t even turn on the lights or skimmer. So I’m trying to rescue it.

The old sand could also be causing you issues, old sand beds that are disturbed such as when moving a tank can release a lot of really nasty stuff into your water.. the highlighted rocks look like lava to me, you will get mixed opinions but because of potential metals that could leach into your water I don’t trust lava rock in a reef tank.. iron for example in a high enough concentrations is deadly to corals.
