Been looking for other options for my hob filter that died. Something quieter. The overflow can be noisy as the water evaporates. I don't want to do a sump. Maybe a hob sump. Opinions?

Since you don't want a sump, go with a canister filter. Down side is the plumbing hanging over the back of the tank.

If you're not going with a sump just get another hob fliter imo. The canister filter will require more frequent maintenance and be more of a hassle when you do do maintenance.

Personally I like a canister filter because of the amount of media you can fit in it. Fluval 305 or 405.
I have learned to ditch the sponges. Poly filter in the first tray with bag of carbon and a bag of purigen or phosgaurd if needed. The other two trays full of Pond Matrix. Clean it religiously every week or every other week. Depending on your bio load. They also provide great adjustable flow. Mine are silent.

Ime a canister needs as much maint as any other mech filter.

It's also MUCH more efficent as a mech filter

I'd run floss and carbon only. Leave the floss on top in a couple layers and it's pretty quick to change. Leave the rest empty imo.

Throw away the rest of the stuff. Or keep a few ceramic rings for emergency or qt seeding

The sun sun $60 canister from amazon is surprisingly well built btw.

I did mod my in tank parts to keep a lower profile. Still , stock, its less ugly than a pump from a hob skimmer
