GFO is granular ferric oxide. It is a phosphate binder. I discuss it here:

GAC stands for granular activated carbon. The black pellets used to bind organic matter, and reduce yellowing of the water.

Thanks again. Possible to put each in a filter bag inside the canister filter, or should one or both be loose?

Bag is fine for GAC. The GFO might not do well that way unless mixed with GAC, and even so may harden up.
