I have a 36 gall tank running now for about a year and a half. After cleaning my Fluval 206 filter it now only sporadically works. I took it apart again, checked input and output tubes but can't figure it out. my wife just lost her job do buying a new one isn't possible right now. How bad will it be if I don't have one and just do more frequent water changes?

Depends on what other equipment you have. Most of us don't use a filter so as long as you weren't relying on it for flow, I wouldn't worry about it. If you have live rock and or a sump,

You should be fine, what were you running in the canister? Just check your numbers more frequently like everyday then every 3 days then weekly. If they start to rise do more water changes

What came with it, Carbon on top of a polishing pad, ceramic tubes (bio filtration) Sponge and filter pads.
