Hey people. Im running an old Eheim 2222 on my newly established 20g nano reef. It has two media trays. Currently I have one tray filled with floss that I change weekly, and the other tray is filled with Seachem matrix. My question is, is it better to keep the trays are they are with floss and matrix, or add a prefilter that I will change daily and fill both trays with the matrix?

Thanks in advance for any replies

#WelcometoR2R!!! There are probably many ways to configure your canister and some will even say to stay away from canisters all together. I have several tanks and am running a canister on one of them. Most pre-filters are large spore sponges and the floss inside will probably mechanically filter some smaller things that the pre-filter won't catch. You may want to add the pre-filter and see what the floss looks like after a week or two. If it is still clean then you can more confidently replace the media in that chamber. Good luck on whatever you decide!

Thanks for the welcome!
Ye I have put floss in the prefilter to stop detritus from entering the canister as much as possible, I change that everyday. I was just thinking if I have floss as a prefilter is it neccessary to have floss in a media basket as well. Maybe it would be better just increasing my nitrification/denitrification capacity with more matrix. But ye Ill check the state of my floss basket and decide accordingly. Thanks for your response.

I have a canister on my coral and invert QT system I have 3 trays. I put in floss and a filter pad in one tray. I change the floss every week and the pad once every 2 weeks.
