I have a Canister filter on my main tank and I keep reading not to run bio balls or the foam insterts, what should i replace those 2 items with or should i just leave those trays empty?? Thanks

You could run carbon/gfo in it I guess. You want a protein skimmer, not a canister filter.

I have a protein skimmer and the canister filter and a refugium/sump, but I still have high nitrate and thats what im trying to eliminate, its got me stumped ha

have u been running the canister while your having this problem... u may not be changing the media enough or its just part of the cause.... how much and how often do u feed, how many fish and what size tank?

Yeah it has been running, I change the media out every two weeks and its a 100 gal with 55 gal refuge and about 11 fish

I would remove the sponges and everything... Run carbon and gfo in sacks inside the canister and that's it...

+1. it will work well as carbon/gfo canister.

For the nitrates try water changing and growing chaeto in the fuge. Remember to prune the chaeto out as a export method. Also try more spot feeding and less broadcast feeding if that is your method of feeding (basically try and get less waste in the tank).

Ok great thanks guys, what do you think is the best GFO to get?? I have phosguard now

I use the stuff from BRS. I am not completely sold on it as I haven't really noticed that it did much. I will say that while using the GFO no spikes have happened. So take it for what you will. I don't plan on switching to another

I'm on my phone....

The best gfo you can buy is rawaphos aka. "black gold" for it's price haha... It's great stuff and if you decide to switch it start on the low side it's powerfull and will shock your corals if you put to much..
