Canister filter yay or nay..?

I have a Penn Plax cascade running on a 55g right now on one of my a fish only systems. It is a viable budget canister, but not on the level (or price) with a Fluval. IME the important part is consistent cleaning/maintenance of the canister. IMO, a sump is still a better long term solution. Good luck!

What you mentioned is best overlooked due to money already spent I think that's how we keep skipping over that detail. comfort of the aquarist is why bulk surface area freshwater filters are used in reefing. Just like bottle bac in 50% of cases

Not harshing anyone's canister filter use, only wanted to point out how it's not indicated for reefing but ok to spend money on if desired. Extra current never harmed anyone's reefs, but a powerhead is much better way and reasoning. Way less leak points and upkeep cost/ media changing etc

Using a canister for anything other than extra surface area would be an accurate expenditure, and it might affect params too in a way one could measure

Having one on hand with carbon loading for emergencies, wise.

Just pull the bio wheels off. Assuming you have live rock, the bio wheels arent necessary. Aquaclear hob's dont have them at all.

I'll say this budget friendly canisters don't usually hold up well to the constant opening required for keeping them clean enough for saltwater.

I think on a 55 some aquaclears will serve you better and way easier to clean.

Have looked at the Seachem Tidals? I’ve got a bio wheel 350 on my fresh tank and don’t care for it, but it came with the tank. I bought a tidal 110 for my 50 gal reef tank and love it. The compartment is huge, pump is submerged so no worries about restarting after cutting power, and it’s got a surface skimming grate.

I run a 75 Tidal on my 40B with just foam filter and matrix bio media. How do you have yours setup? I was gonna remove the foam filter pad and just run the matrix for bio filtration

I'm running it the same way. If I blast off the rocks I'll throw filter floss in there for a day to grab everything out. I also have a little 7W UV light that I bought for my fresh tank that works wonders for killing off algal blooms and what not in the water column. I'll pop that in there every now and then along with a bag of carbon. I also have a Macro Aqua M50 HOB skimmer next to the filter.

I have a 50 gallon pentagon tank that does not have room for a sump under the stand. On this tank I run a Aquamaxx HOB 1.5 and an OASE Thermo Pro 350 canister filter. The filter is hooked up to an overflow box.

The benefit of the OASE filer is that (1) it contains/houses a heater so that there is no heater in the tank and (2) it has a unique prefilter section where you can easily remove and clean the filter without opening up the whole canister. I use the provided foam on the prefilter but use no foam in the main section. Two trays are filled with Bio Home Ultimate and the other tray are used for other media e.g. carbon, chemipure blue, phosguard etc. as needed. I do run carbon full time in this filter. It is also very quiet and easy to prime.

I would have preferred a sump but it just wasn't possible with this tank. I'm very pleased with the current arrangement. The HOB removes a large amount of waste I probably could run this tank on just the HOB but the OASE gives me the flexibility to use other media and keeps the heater out of the tank. I have two MP10 powerheads on this tank and with the flow from these combined with the outputs from the canister and HOB, I have plenty of movement and my water is crystal clear.

Agreed! I prefer to run high nutrients as this seems to work the best in my particular setup. So I like the idea of being able to use carbon and phosphate if needed. And removing some sediment / polishing the water is a plus. Frankly the tank is already pretty clear with just a protein skimmer and uv.

I've never liked those biowheels. They seem like a gimmick. I'd pull them off. I used to use canisters all the time for both fresh and salt. They work great, but it gets really old having to pull them out and clean them all the time.
