I'm thinking about adding on an extra canister filter I have lying around to my DAS aquarium. The aquarium has an in tank overflow system with no socks. It goes straight to a skimmer, then through a couple of pads that kinda do a little work, then back out to the tank. The idea of adding the canister is to add a mechanical filtration to the tank to help drop phosphate and polish the water. Have people done this, and what do they use in the canisters to filter the water? How often are people changing these out? thanks in advance

I think cans are mainly discouraged, though I did like it when I had an FX5. It made the water crystal clear, and definitely kept nitrates above phosphates for balance.(now that I use nopox that would be advantageous)
Otherwise now though I don't have any mechanical filtration except for an undersized skimmer. I find the tank is filled with more debris, but filter feeders appreciate it much more I think.

If you want a good solid canister filter though, I highly suggest the FX5. That thing is a beast.
