Canister filter?

So I have a 20 long reef with softies only and running a 65 gallon skimmer, 2 aquaclear 30 gallon hob filters and was wondering if I can set up a fluval 406 canister that I have laying around and use it just for media and take the pads out so it doesn't turn into a nitrate factory.. If so what media is recommended. Thanks

I have a canister filter and I'm changing all the filter media in it to marine pure balls... every thing I've read points to marine pure being the best surface area media and worth the price

Will you be running pads with the marine pure balls?

And also are you leaving the baskets on or taking them out to run the balls

I will be running the coarse and fine pads with a pouch of charcoal before the marine pure... I'm leaving the baskets in for water flow and ease of maintenance if needed
