Canister filter?

That’s what im probably gonna get, just wanna make sure there are no other alternatives that are cheaper. Thx

I ran a 306 for 2 years it works good, but it doesn't enough filtering and doesn't have the extra water cupacity needed. I had a constant battle with GHA. Which is why I moved up to the FX4 canister
Did the FX4 fix the gha problem? Because im dealing with GHA constantly.

The Fluval is a great choice. Another option to consider is the Sicce Whale canister filter.

Why run a canister filter at all?
I don't know of anyone, or any tanks on R2R for that matter who are running canister filters. Clearly some people are as suggestions are being offered. What benefits would you see from one? Seems like it would be more trouble than it's worth..

Many people on R2R run canister filters in saltwater tanks. They have their place, just like HOBs, sumps, closed circuit systems, refugiums and all the types and variations of filtration.

Im gonna buy a new canister filter for my 75 gal salt tank. Whats a good filter under $200?
If you can swing it fx4. Petsmart has them on sale for 200. If not the 406 is a better model for you. The best being the fx4. I used the 406 upgraded to fx4. You can grow sps. Just be diligent on cleaning. Once a month make it a habit.

@SirDukelll your $200 budget greatly limits my suggestions for a canister filter that's suitable for a 75-gal saltwater tank. When you consider the minimum flow for good filtration is typically 4-5x tank capacity, you're talking 300 gph effective flow. In the typical system where the return pump or canister head is going to be roughly 1-meter below the tank water level, that means you need a filter rated at 600 gph. We're talking FX4-FX6 ratings.

I think you will be much happier if you raise your budget to $350 and go after something much more robust.

Agree. Once my 406 broke (my fault) I moved to the fx4. Huge difference. 406 would be the lowest I would recommend.

I ran one for years. There's nothing wrong with a well maintained canister filter.

IMO, If you want the mack-daddy canister filter, go after a Oase Biomaster Thermo 850. You will have to buy it directly from Oase as it's not even listed on Amazon yet.
Oase Biomaster Thermo 850

A Biomaster 600 (non-thermo) is the smallest I would recommend for a 75-gal. I myself prefer the Thermo versions because it eliminates a heater in the display tank. But a non-Thermo 600 can be had for $300.

Well my tank is and does run on canister, so clearly you don't speak for everyone.
