Hey everyone... I have a 30 gl tank with a 5 gl HOB refuge. The tank has only been up and running for about 3 weeks. I not currently running any type of filtration because i was told that macro algae will help with ammonia lvls. So im wondering whats the best way to filter out the dust and other stuff that falls into the tank. I dont have a lid on the tank. I was considering installing a canister filter to help clean the water but ive been reading that they end up being nitrite factory's. so does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on what i can do?

No to the canister filter it will be a nitrate problem. Protein skimmer, live rock and good circulation my friend.

They are only nitrate factory's if they are not maintained properly. Cleaned often and the right media and they will accomplish what you want. Or if not up to cleaning weekly only use at water changes. I run mine all the time no bio media just carbon & sponges.

+1. I run a canister on my 55 and yes it can be a nitrate factory. This happens if I get lazy with the maintenance.

I have a good skimmer and 34 lbs of live rock. But the water is cloudy and has lots of debris floating around.
