Canister Filters

My wife dosnt like the smell of the open filter system I have, can anyone suggest a good Canister Filter ?
are they worth the money, do they work or not ?

They are high maintenance for marine aquaria but yes you can use one.
I did for years
The Rena xp3 is what I used

what are you using now a hang on bio filter? imo a canister filter is more of pain. more work to clean and keep clean. if not clean regularly can be a place for phosphates to build up. with that in mind fluval filter are nice. easy to work with and and break down once a month for cleaning.

Were you running any GAC in that open top filter you have? Unless the tank is an absolute mess or there's food on the edges of a tank, there really shouldn't be any smell at all coming from the tank IMO.

How come your sump/open filter as you said smells?
I think there's more of a smell coming from the tank itself than your sump.
Canister filters and of course it depends on your livestock but you need to clean them out every week or more as they will become phosphate factories.

Welcome to the community! Marine land/fluval / ehiem/ the rena are all good options, if the tank smells run some carbon. Carbon takes the foul odor out

LOL, forgot about the carbon, but that's only cause I don't run carbon.
