So! In my 16 gallon nano bowfront i have 2 filters, one is a subersable filter i use as a powerhead mostly, the other is a small hang on back filter. Now i feel my tank is too small for any real sump system and i hate the hang on back filter. Thus my mind wanders to canister filters. I have never ran one on a tank but i know the freshwater world raves about them. Has anyone used canister filters on a saltwater tank? I would like to hear pros and cons and any experiences anyone has runninh canister filters on saltwater tanks and specifically nano tanks. I have a total mixed reef but i want to expand the tank twards the sps way and use it for an acro frag garden to i need to keep the water top quality and i find my self having to do exsessive water changes to pick up the slack for my current filtration.

I think you'll find they tend to collect organic matter and break it down well, but can get clogged and need to be cleaned often. Freshwater tanks don't necessarily keep the same exacting standards. It may help for biological filtration, but water changes may be a better solution long term.

The other thing is i notice sooo many copepods that breed in my filter so when i have to change filers i try to shake out as i can to put them back in the tank.(for that reason my clownfish loves it when i change filters) but i know i throw away so many little critters. But at the same time i dont even know if the pods will still thrive in the canister filter

If you do decide to go that route, I have a Fluval canister filter I would sell to you. I personally have not used them, just got this one from a friend when he moved out of the country.

Ok thanks @saltyfilmfolks those links help alot. I have never personally ran a canister filter on a tank so i will have to do some reading and study those filters some more before i decide to purchase one. Ill be doing some more reading for sure.

dont worry about it at all.

hold on to it. IMO. Its become my favorite tank tool. An aquatic shop vac. floss only triple thick if you want, cleaning the sump, rescaping, scrubbing algae, chasing fish anything that stirs up the tank.
also emergency tool, carbon and gfo if something bad happens.
